As we have done in past years, The PHP Foundation is opening applications for contractors for 2027. Foundation contractors are responsible for a variety of core development areas, and we are open to hearing your ideas.
The application form will be open until October 20, 2026, end of day, Anywhere on Earth (AoE).
Note: This is not a job for PHP developers or aspiring PHP developers. PHP is written in the C programming language, and as such, this role requires C and systems programming experience.

We aim to improve the development experience as well as the sustainability and quality of the PHP language. Your proposal should indicate how your work will affect one or more of these areas.
Please note that opening applications does not guarantee we will hire any new contractors.

Working for The PHP Foundation offers a level of flexibility and autonomy, but it also requires discipline, responsiveness, a collaborative attitude, good communication skills, and a high level of professionalism.
Developing new RFCs and building new features is a fairly small part of the job. Most of the work is typical maintenance of an open-source project, such as triaging and responding to incoming issues, reviewing community PRs, writing fixes for open bugs, and focusing on reducing the backlog of existing issues and PRs.
We are a fully distributed team. You can work from any place* and at any time. All communication is asynchronous via Slack, GitHub, and email. We meet for synchronous calls once a month and have occasional check-ins with the Executive Director.
Your work should be in line with the foundation's mission statement, and we expect you to follow the code of conduct both internally and in public spaces where you have a well-known affiliation with The PHP Foundation..

The PHP Foundation is a collective of people and organizations relying on the PHP language. Its mission is to ensure the long-term prosperity of the PHP language. The PHP Foundation focuses on providing financial support and guidance to PHP language developers to support its goals of improving the language for its users, providing high-quality maintenance, and improving the PHP language project to retain current contributors and to integrate new contributors. The PHP Foundation aims to promote the public image of the PHP language in the interest of retaining existing and gaining new users and contributors.
